Halloween Party 2022 Edition
Similar to last year we had the privilege of hosting the Halloween Party in 2022. We had 11 participant including me and my wife, the game hosts. We split the participants into 3 and 2 player teams (3 vs 3 vs 3 vs 2).
Each game awarded points based on standings: 4 points for first place, 3 points for second, 2 for third and 1 for last place. We also bought a variety of chocolates that we handed out to the teams whenever they earned points.
Points were tracked on a hand drawn table of points. Click here to check out the game pack containing this Table of Points.
Here are the games we played:
Game 1: Quiz
We started with a Quiz, just like last year since it was received well and was relatively quick to play. The questions were presented on a TV based on a PPT, and all teams watched the slideshow.
Each team received a sheet of paper with the questions. Once all answers were locked in, the answer sheets were passed to neighboring teams for grading. The game master then revealed the correct answers, and points were awarded based on the total number of correct responses each team had. The team with the most correct answers claimed first place.
Game 2: A Fake Artist Goes To New York
This game has a mixture of drawing and deduction, leading to some funny situations.
Rules are super simple: Everyone is drawing one picture together... but one player doesn't even know what they draw. There is a fake artist hiding among the real artists - can you find out who it is? The fake artist has to be careful not to be identified and the real artists have to be careful not to make it too easy for the deceiver.
Game 3: Twixter
Wanted to add some dexterity games, and we found this game on some random YouTube video.
Rules:
- Each team selects a member for the challenge.
- Each player is given 3 pieces of chocolate (originally Twix, but any type will work) and must aim to flick them into 3 glasses set at varying distances.
- The objective is to land one piece of chocolate in each glass.
- The player who completes the task the fastest wins first place, with subsequent players taking second, third, and so on.
Game 4: Try not to laugh challenge
An absolutely hilarious game that requires a lot of creativity.
Rules:
- In each round, a team selects one member to take on the challenge. The chosen member fills their mouth with water and must keep a straight face until the end of the round (2 minutes). The opposing team tries their best to make the player laugh.
- If the player laughs and spits out the water, the opposing team earns a point.
- If the player manages to keep a straight face until the end, their team gains a point.
- Before each round, teams have a few minutes to prepare in a separate room that is filled with props like costumes, hats, skeletons. Include as many weird things as you would like!
We made sure everyone had a turn as the challenger, which made the game last a bit longer than expected, but overall it was well worth it!
Remember that it is more important to have fun than to win a silly contest!
Game 5: Movie Quiz
The movie quiz was last year's fan favorite, so I made sure to create a new version of it for this year.
Here is how it works:
- As the game master, I select several movies that I believe all guests have seen. I then watch each movie and create short clips containing some clues about the movie, but nothing too obvious.
- I create 3-5 clips per movie.
- Players are shown the clips one at a time and the objective is to guess which movie the clips are from.
- Each player can guess only once for each movie, regardless of whether they are correct or not. This adds a strategic risk/reward element.
Game 6: Quiplash from Jackbox games
We added some lighthearted fun with Quiplash from Jackbox games. This game is reminiscent of Cards Against Humanity and is designed for laughs rather than serious competitions.
Players are presented with prompts, and each participant must come up with the funniest response they can think of. The responses are then pitted against each other, allowing everyone to vote for their favorite.
Game 7: Mario Kart - Nintendo Switch
The final game of the evening was Mario Kart on Nintendo Switch. We played 3 races, with each team member taking a turn to compete. With the Nintendo consoles sometimes cheering for your teammates is even more fun than playing the game.
Summary
We had an excellent time this year as well! The "Try Not to Laugh Challenge", the "Movie Quiz", and the "Halloween Quiz" were voted as the best games of the evening.
List of tools required for the games:
- TV and Laptop
- Whiteboard for drawing
- Props for the Try Not to Laugh Challenge
- Quiplash on a Steam account
- Nintendo Switch and a Mario Kart license
